Guild member Juliet Rix, an award-winning national journalist, editor and broadcaster, has won the Best National Newspaper Award in the Caribbean Travel Media Awards for her inspiring coverage of Dominica two years after the devastation of Hurricane Irma. The awards are run by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO).

Juliet’s article was published in The Telegraph, in the print edition as ‘The Calm After the Storm’ and online as ‘Rediscovering Dominica two years after the hurricane‘.

Her piece describes the restoration — both natural and human-made — after Hurricane Maria ripped through the West Indian island country on September 18, 2017.

‘Today, Dominica’s nine volcanoes are once again wrapped in rainforest, papayas hang heavy on the trees, the island’s 365 rivers flow unrushed by storm-rapids, and you can once more follow this tiny nation’s many hiking trails (though with minor diversions) to scenic lakes and towering waterfalls,’ she writes in the piece.

Carol Hay, the CTO’s director of marketing for UK and Europe, said “The Caribbean Travel Media Awards have successively drawn a high standard of entries in all categories, each entry playing their part in raising awareness of the Caribbean as a region, and this year has been no exception.’
