What makes it great: The new V&A Dundee is that rare thing in travel, a startling architectural wonder that has instantly been feted from all quarters, from the high heid yins of Scottish culture, to the passionately proud Dundonians who have instantly taken it to heart. It is a building that it is impossible not to react to, a real design icon on the waterfront of a city with arguably the finest setting of any in the UK. Were it just a celebration of design for design’s sake it would still be a roaring success. It is so, so much more though. The V&A Dundee is a quite brilliant venue for a permanent collection that features everything from avant garde Scottish design right through to the classics of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The new V&A Dundee deserves every bit of the lavish praise being directed towards this shining new cultural and design star on the banks of the Tay.
