BGTW Tourism awards - Strawberry Hill

Strawberry Hill wins Highly Commended in Best UK Tourism Project 2015

For the past 40 years, the British Guild of Travel Writers has recognised scores of new tourism initiatives by handing out special awards. They come in three categories:

  • Best in the UK
  • Best in Europe
  • Best in the Wider World

Some projects have cost millions and are well-publicised; others are simpler community projects that take just as much effort and love.

Even 'Highly Commended' is cause for excitement!

Even ‘Highly Commended’ is cause for excitement!

Guild members really do travel the world, reporting back on initiatives they think deserve notice. We shortlist the best of those put forward; the proposers make presentations to our members; members ask questions and then vote. But this is not all about Gold, Silver and Bronze. This really is about taking part. After all, being nominated as one of the best new tourism projects in the UK, Europe or the Wider World is still a fantastic achievement.

Recent award-winners include the King Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester, the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, and the Loire à Vélo cycle trail in France. From further afield, members have spotlighted projects that might not otherwise have received recognition: the Tren Crucero (Ecuador), the Himalayan Village Ways (India) and the Nyungwe Nziza park project (Rwanda).

The highlight of the year? That has to be the Awards Dinner, a glittering black-tie gala night on the eve of World Travel Market each November, held in the ballroom at London’s Savoy Hotel.
