Biography:
I’m a British writer based in Tokyo, creating award-winning work for media around the globe: for clients that include National Geographic Traveler, BBC Travel, The Economist 1843, The Independent, various in-flight publications, Fodor’s, DK Travel, and others.

Feature length or short, I like to tell stories; whether that’s about the sumo bulls of the remote Oki Islands, a master Bunraku puppet maker in Osaka or the cat that saved a Japanese railway. I also enjoy more in-depth projects. To date, I’ve edited and updated more than a dozen books on Japan and have authored seven of my own, including Japanese Inns & Hot Springs and the NATJA Gold Award-winning Japan Traveler’s Companion.

Besides travel writing, my current long-term projects include a collection of writing that looks at Japan in short form (through haiku poetry, flash fiction and non-fiction vignettes) and a book on the country’s small towns.
