Biography

Chris is a highly acclaimed photographer renowned for his mastery of natural light and a profound passion for capturing the essence of travel. With a distinct style characterised by striking simplicity and a graphic quality, since he turned professional in 1992.
Over the course of his illustrious career, Chris has photographed an extensive range of subjects, including travel destinations, landscapes, people, architecture, gardens, food and wildlife, in diverse locations worldwide. His rare ability to excel in various types of photography demonstrates not only a deep understanding of light, but also a commitment to exploring the visual and creative potential of different subjects. This versatility allows him to find inspiration in diversity, making his work visually and creatively stimulating. He is passionate about making images which are timeless and have a wow factor.
Much of Chris’s photography is commissioned for specific advertising and editorial projects, and he works with tourist boards, travel companies, tour operators and multinationals. He has photographed around 50 travel books, guide books and coffee table books, and his images have been featured extensively in newspapers, magazines, and books globally.
In addition to his photographic accomplishments, Chris is an influential figure in the field of photography education and curation. His dedication to sharing his expertise and inspiring others in the field of photography makes him a revered industry expert and educator. He and his work continue to inspire photographers and enthusiasts alike, encouraging them to explore the beauty of the world through the lens of creativity and light. He lectures at travel and photography events – inc. for Fujifilm, Adobe and Apple – and on TV, as well as his own workshops and mentoring.
Chris founded and runs the prestigious international Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) awards, and has curated 52 international indoor and outdoor exhibitions across the globe. He also runs Eye for the Light – an online creative photography, adventure and travel magazine – which now now boasts around 140 original features, many of which are penned and photographed by Chris himself. He also presents both '&Coe' and 'Newton & Coe' podcasts (34 to date) which are widely accessible on major streaming platforms.
He is Chair of the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW)
